Dr. Bang has substantial experience developing GMMs for engineering purposes. Dr. Bang has over 18 years of expertise with MATLAB, 5 years with the R statistical tool, and 5 years with Python. Dr. Bang has extensive expertise with linear and nonlinear mixed effects regression models implemented in MATLAB and R statistical software, Gaussian Processes for Machine Learning (GPML tools), and Bayesian hierarchical/multilevel regression/classification in Python (pyMC3 package). His focus is on research that employs a range of traditional and progressive methodologies in developing ground motion prediction models (GMMs) for earthquake engineering applications. The resulting predictive model is used to perform probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) to quantify various levels of ground motion shaking for seismic structure design. He developed three GMMs that were used by National Center Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in the Taiwan Senior Seismic Hazard Analysis Committee (TSSHAC) Level 3 projects. One of these models was used in the OpenQuake’s Engine for computing the seismic hazard and seismic risk of earthquakes on a global scale.
From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Bang worked on the TSSHAC level 3 project, which was sponsored by NCREE. He took on the task of constructing ground motion prediction models. From 2019 to 2021, He worked on the Ground Motion Response Analysis (GMRS) project hosted by NCREE. His study focused on developing ground motion models for vertical and vertical-to-horizontal spectral ratios. From 2020 to 2022, Dr. Bang worked on the Random Vibration Theory (RVT) project hosted by UC Berkeley’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The first item he worked on was the creation of a conditional GMM for translating Fourier spectral amplitude to pseudo-spectral acceleration. The second topic that he worked on was “Methodology for developing 1-D shear wave velocity model and kappa”. In the present stage, Dr. Bang is expanding his research to geotechnical engineering practice, namely developing a shear-wave velocity (Vs) model for California, which will be utilized to calculate the site-specific amplification adjustment to the bedrock design spectrum. The study uses two geotechnical algorithms, Strata and Deep soils, to determine the ground motion response at the surface based on input from bedrock.

Dr. Hung (Jim) La

✧ Affiliation: AIR Corp; University of Nevada, Reno
✧ Email: hla[at]unr.edu

Biography

AIR Corp, under the leadership of founder and CEO Dr. Jim La, is a cutting-edge robotics and automation company at the forefront of innovation.
