OVERVIEW

The COVID-19 pandemic’s unprecedented shock has had a profound and serious impact on the global economy. It plunged a majority of countries into recession in 2020 as movement restrictions caused serious disruptions in economic activities. It has changed the working and management styles as well as productivity and performance evaluation in workplaces. As we approach the two-year mark, the world economy still faces varieties of difficulties aggravated by new variants of Coronavirus, especially for countries with weak health systems. In such an uncertain world, governments and businesses need sound and correct decisions to minimize negative impacts and quickly adapt to the new normal. This session invited presentations regarding economics situations and business operations in the post-pandemic from both academic and industrial perspectives. It is expected to offer fruitful discussions on key economic and business issues, including employment outcomes, global value chain, digital marketing and transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been widely recognized that there is a gap between the works conducted in the industry and the research performed in the university. This gap is partially caused by the different objectives of the two parties. We have observed many successful stories where academia and industry travelled together to deal with challenging issues of society. Especially, in this 21st century, the pressing issue of global warming and the pandemics of COVID-19 urge us to understand and overcome the aforementioned gap. 

VANJ Conference 2021 offers this Special Session as a forum for all attendees to discuss and share their experiences to build a bridge between academia and industry. Topic of interests include, but are not limited to: 

• The differences between work in academia and industry
• Advices to young students/researchers about switching between academic and industry careers
• Introduction to the research projects in which academia and industry cooperate tightly and effectively
• Introduction to summer schools and seminars for exchanging ideas between academia and industry
• The teaching and education experiences to cover the gap between academia and industry     

Modern power grids with the high penetration of renewable energy sources (e.g. photovoltaic, wind, fuel-cell, so forth) have been being more and more popular in recent years. In those grids, various energy conversion systems, energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been broadly used and had important roles to improve efficacy and stability of the grids as well as help reduce CO₂ emission significantly. This special session is also focused on advanced control methods and mechanism for microgrids, smart grids, energy markets and intelligent mobility systems, which consist of renewable energy, distributed generators, power converters, ESS, EVs and HEVs.

Medical imaging is of crucial importance in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of a wide range of diseases and disorders, from internal lesions to cancers. In recent years, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to analyze medical imaging data and identify relevant clinical findings has rapidly grown to support medical experts in saving human lives. State-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (AIMI) session focuses on the most recent trends and challenges in this area, and it brings the renowned scientists and experts to share their original works aimed to identify new cutting-edge techniques and their applications in medical imaging.

Recently, many fascinating physical phenomena have been found in two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as valleytronics, Mott-like correlated insulators, quantum anomalous Hall insulators, or superconductors. For example, semimetallic graphene can be turned into a series of quantum states in magic-angle moiré superlattices, which provides an unprecedented path to strongly correlated physics to study high-temperature unconventional superconductors. On the other hand, various 2D materials, such as graphene, black phosphorus, transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g., MoS2, MoSe2, WSe2), and MXenes, have flexibility, large surface area, chemical stability, and excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, make them promising for portable and wearable energy devices. Therefore, the 2D materials may lead to new physics and applications in the near future. In this section, we would like to invite researchers in the 2D materials field to join us to discuss the most recent update of physics and devices in 2D materials.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, that posts a major threat to the pork industry worldwide. The recent epidemic of ASF has affected 10 out of 42 member countries in the Asia and the Pacific region, seriously affecting their economies and the global pig production and meat supply (FAO, 2020). In Vietnam, since the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) confirmed its first ASF outbreak in 2019, all 63 provinces/cities experienced outbreaks. Death and culling together, ASF caused the loss of about 6 million pigs in 2019, and about 90 thousand in 2020 according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. For the first six months of 2021, more than 60 thousand pigs were lost. Although the recovery of Vietnam’s swine industry is underway, it has not reached the pre-ASF level, as ongoing challenges with ASF remain. However, the lack of available vaccines against ASF makes its eradication difficult. As pig production is an important sector of the economy, disease control is a shared interest and must be considered a shared responsibility. Well-coordinated national, regional and global efforts as well as effective collaboration and communication between all relevant stakeholders in the areas of agriculture and the environment will be required to limit global consequences of ASF, allowing safe trade and the sustainability of pig farming. In this context, an international conference “African swine fever: The final frontier” organized by the Vietnam Youth Vet Network and VANJ aims to bring together academic scientists, researchers and research scholars to exchange and share experiences and research results regarding preparedness, prevention and control of African Swine Fever.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most global health concerns and it happened in both high income and middle and low income countries. It is related to the transmission of AMR bacteria between human and human, from environment, animals to human, and vice versa. Limited understanding was found on how AMR genes can be transmitted to and from humans. In this session, we are going to share some key achievements in analysis of gene sequence and profile of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in AMR bacteria via human body, animal, and environment. Experts also discuss the key challenges in gene detection, sequence and analysis in Japan and in Vietnam. And finally, we also give some recommendations for the development of gene sequencing and genome sequence analysis for AMR bacteria in the future research in Japan and Vietnam.
