The combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies is rapidly transforming the field of materials science, opening up new opportunities for the discovery and design of advanced materials. The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to AI, quantum computing, and quantum materials in 2024, 2022, and 2016, highlighting the significance of these developments. Quantum materials, known for their unique quantum mechanical properties such as superconductivity, topological phases, and entanglement, have the potential for revolutionary applications in energy, electronics, and communication technologies. However, the intricate nature of these materials and the vastness of their configuration spaces have presented challenges for traditional computational methods. Machine learning (ML) techniques, a subset of AI, have emerged as a powerful tool for expediting the exploration of quantum materials by predicting material properties, optimizing quantum simulations, and uncovering new quantum phenomena. On the other hand, quantum computing has the ability to simulate quantum systems with significantly greater precision than classical computers, offering a way to solve material problems that are currently unsolvable. The ultimate aim is to create quantum devices using quantum materials. In this section, we will discuss interdisciplinary research, including theoretical and experimental work on AI, quantum computing, and quantum materials.

This session will provide an in-depth exploration of the unique challenges, opportunities, and societal factors that shape women’s reproductive health in the Japanese context. This session will focus on key issues such as access to healthcare services, the cultural and legal dimensions of reproductive rights, and the role of public policy in supporting women through various stages of their reproductive lives. In recent years, Japan has seen an influx of young Vietnamese women working as technical trainees, who are part of a growing population of around 400,000 trainees supporting Japanese industry. However, these women often face significant challenges due to a lack of information and knowledge about their reproductive health rights. This session will explore the barriers these women encounter in accessing reproductive healthcare, including contraception, prenatal care, and maternal health services, and how language, cultural differences, and legal constraints compound these challenges. By bringing together experts in the field, this session will create a space for informed discussions on how Japan can improve reproductive health services and education for both Japanese women and foreign workers. Participants will gain insights into ongoing research, healthcare policies, and community-based initiatives aimed at addressing the specific needs of foreign women, particularly the Vietnamese technical trainees. Ultimately, the session will serve as a platform to advocate for improved reproductive health literacy and policy reform, empowering women to take control of their reproductive futures in Japan, regardless of their nationality or employment status.

SS12: How Languages Are Learned in the Age of AI
Chair: Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Phuong
✧ Affiliation: Rikkyo University
✧ Email: phuongtran[at]rikkyo.ac.jp
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has spread over the decade and gradually become a part of our lives in many fields including education. As a recent AI tool generated by OpenAI, ChatGPT offers numerous potential opportunities and challenges for language learners and teachers. (Ohashi & Alm, 2023; Solak, 2024). In order to explore the merits and demerits of AI, Huang et al., (2023) has provided comprehensive coverage AI research trends in language education by analyzing publications from 2000 to 2019 with impressive results which indicated that AI was frequently used to assist students in learning writing, reading, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and listening. Natural language processing, automated speech recognition, and learner profiling were commonly applied to develop automated writing evaluation, personalized learning, and intelligent tutoring systems. However, while AI offers many benefits for language learners, there are also concerns about its impact on human interaction and socialization skills. Stephen Hawking said “Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.” Therefore, our concern is how to avoid the potential risks? As educators, when transforming the Language Teaching Experience in the Age of AI, we need to take ethical, social, and cultural aspects into considerations in implementing AI in Language Education (Satpute, 2023). It is also a need in updating AI literacies and competencies of stakeholders who use and are impacted by AI in education; identification of effective learning and teaching practices with the use of AI; and policy development to increase responsiveness of education systems to rapid changes driven by AI(Gašević et al., 2023). In this session, we would like to discuss the transformation of education in general and language education in particular in the age of AI.
